Understand Gravity

Proinsias C., Hoboken, NJ

Entering Adulthood

Not the kind that keeps your feet on the ground. This kind matters more. It shapes your happiness, who you become, and how you love. This gravity decides who you're drawn to, and who is drawn to you. Think of two people, two orbiting bodies. Each one is pulling the other in while being pulled in. It decides who you date. It can lead you toward a healthy marriage and a fulfilled life. Or it can lead you into the same relationship mistakes over and over, until you're unhappy, divorced, and unsure how you got there. Psychologists have studied this pattern for decades. Nobody told you about it. It starts at home. The way you were raised set your definition of "normal." If home was healthy, healthy feels normal. If it was chaotic or toxic, that feels normal too. You may believe your upbringing was fine when it wasn't. Even if you know it was toxic, you're still likely to repeat it. Familiar feels comfortable. Your mind can predict it, and your nervous system settles into it. Without realizing it, you'll look for it again. You own your half. In most relationships, you choose your partner as much as they choose you. That isn't about blame. It means you have power. If you can see the pattern, you can change it. My challenge to you: question your normal. Ask your family, relatives, and long-time friends what they saw growing up. Use AI to explore terms like attachment styles and repetition compulsion. Read about them, think about them, and be honest about what you recognize. You can't change a pattern you can't see.
